The Children's Community Garden
Children and their adults reconnecting to nature
Children and their adults reconnecting to nature
Our ancestors understood that humans are just a part of this web called life. Connecting to the earth, nature, and other non-human relatives as a community enforces belonging. Children instinctively gravitate to nature. Being in nature, and developing a garden space, no matter how small, can provide opportunities for kids to engage with the outdoor environment, learn about other life forces, understand cycles and seasons, and see themselves as a part of the whole. Returning to nature will not only teach children where food comes from, provide sensory experiences, and promote rich language expression and articulation, but will also develop a climate justice lens and the skills necessary to work through the physical, mental and emotional tolls brought on by living in a concrete world.
ECJ is currently working on an online learning platform that can be utilized with your own garden and outdoor spaces, providing weekly learning themes, activities, read along's, newsletters, and virtual community interactions. In a world where academics is contained to desks, worksheets, and tech, we hope to help provide children a space where they will learn through self awareness and interaction with the natural environment and each other.
There are many garden spaces in your community where children and their adults can gather. If you would like to start a children's community garden in your neighborhood, please contact admin@earlychildhoodjustice.org
